Fibre optic cable options for MTP/MPO solutions

A number of cable options to support MTP/MPO connectivity solutions and cable assemblies can be divided into the following categories:

  • Trunk Cables
  • Patch cords
  • Array cables
  • Multi-fibre cable assemblies

Each of these type of cables has its place in the network and should be utilised where appropriate. Before going into more detail on these types of cable construction, we also need to determine what type of fibre is being used.

For multimode cabling, OM3 and OM4 fibre are the most common types, with OM5 expected for future adoption. Each type of cable has its own following colour identification:

OM3 – aqua

OM4 – aqua or violet

OM5 – lime green.

When it comes to colour identification, OM4 fibre provides two options, with various availability in either aqua or violet. Most cabling standards allow either option, so it really comes down to customer preference. This needs to be specified and determined by the end user.

For singlemode cabling, the most common fibre type used in cable assemblies is either G657A1 or G657A2. The cables provide an improved MBR over standard G652D fibre and is a good choice for shorter run singlemode options.

G657A2 Bend Insensitive Singlemode Fibre

G657A2 optical fibre in patch cords, provides an improved bend radius and flexibility, which may allow for better cable management and routing in congested areas. The improved bend radius may also allow for increased density in high-density patching fields.

Cable selection for cable assemblies

Generally any trunk/backbone or distribution cabling should use a double sheath or sturdy cable construction.

For example, 12 or 24 fibre microcore trunks with a double sheath will generally have an OD of 4.5mm. This will provide sufficient protection when installed in cable trays and over long lengths. This would be applicable for any rack to rack cabling along cable trays or in conduits.

Other considerations for trunk cable assemblies are accessories including hauling socks/tubes, for long distance hauling and protecting the connectors, as well as staggered breakout lengths.

Most trunk cabling will utilise either 8 or 12 fibre MPO connectors.

MTP/MPO patchcords are used for intra-rack cabling and are generally single sheathed 3mm, 12 or 24 fibre cables. Most of these cables are shorter lengths ranging from 1-10 metres. They have an MTP/MPO on one end, and an MTP/MPO on the opposite end

MTP/MPO array cables are also generally used also for intra-rack cabling and can utilise a 12 fibre or 24 fibre single or double sheath (3mm or 4.5mm). One end has an MTP/MPO connector, and the opposite end has multiple single fibre connectors, such as LC/PC.

Larger fibre trunk cables, in addition to 12 and 24 fibre, also range in size including 48, 72, 96 and up to 144 fibres. It is important to understand the cable diameters, crush and pull resistance and protection of each cable.
